What camera do you use?

Nikon D3 with backups of D200 and D2X

Why do you like Nikon over let's say, Canon?

Canon is great, Nikon is great... I simply prefer Nikon color, and I am comfortable with it;  you can't go wrong with either.

Do you PhotoShop your images?

I use PhotoShop as one would use a regular dark room.  I enhance the image where necessary using typical darkroom techniques such as dodge and burn.  I feel less is better, and less is more realistic.  I concentrate on getting the best images I possibly can straight out of the camera, and use PhotoShop to pop those images.

Do you shoot studio lighting or natural lighting?

I prefer to use both studio lighting and natural lighting depending upon what we are trying to accomplish.  I do not feel a need to limit myself to only one or the other.  I feel that a professional photographer should choose and use her tools wisely depending upon the situation.  If I choose to use artificial lighting, I strive to make that lighting look as natural as possible.

Do you use prime or zoom lenses?

Again, I prefer to use both.  I am one that does not like to limit myself.  When I use zoom lenses, they are the better zoom lenses - all with aperture of 2.8.

Do you take on interns or students as employees?

At this time, no, I do not.  I prefer to work solo; that is just something in my nature.

Do you offer classes?

Yes, I am currently offering classes/workshops for photographers - please visit the STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP site.  I also have a book available titled Studio Lighting Naturally which is similar to a "workshop in a box" and includes actions as well as all my secrets to studio lighting.

Do you offer mentoring?

We are considering adding a one on one mentoring day priced at $995.  You will receive one on one attention from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., lunch provided, all questions answered on all marketing, pricing, how to work in studio lighting, how to work in natural lighting, and you will assist in one portrait session.  A Studio Lighting Naturally Book is provided.  This mentoring is only available to those who live or operate 85 or more miles outside of the zipcode 21111.  Please email if you are interested in this service.

If there are any questions you wish to ask, please Contact Jodie, and we will update this page with them.

As a top Maryland portrait photographer, Jodie Otte primarily photographs children, babies, and pregnancy; however, her landscape and nature images may be seen nationally throughout magazines as well as on greeting cards.  Jodie accepts a select number of commercial assignments per year, but she spends most of her time photographing children in and around her Baltimore, Maryland photography studio.
